The conference “Expanding International Education through Regional Knowledge Exchange Azerbaijan and Georgia” was held on January 20-21, 2022. The event was organized by US Embassies in Baku and Tbilisi and was hosted by Ilia State University at the San Diego University campus in Tbilisi, Georgia. The event brought together leaders in higher education and science internationalization, international relations specialists and diplomats. Opened by US Embassy Culture attaché Christopher Anderson and his counterpart from Baku Richard E. Pinkham, and welcomed by the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the conference had a rich and informative content, interactive sessions and provided a great environment and opportunities for networking. The event also had interactive workshop components and gave an opportunity to work with colleagues from various universities, as well as representatives of governmental and non-governmental sectors from Georgia and Azerbaijan in small groups.
A separate session was dedicated to US students doing their research or teaching in Georgian higher educational institutions. Their stories were sincere and expressed/made obvious the systemic problems in our education and science systems. A discussion on how to address these challenges followed.
The conference was attended by Dr. Ilia Nadareishvili, DTMU Research Unit head, who got an opportunity to network with foreign colleagues, take part in workshops and discussions, and plan further collaboration with the new contacts, as well as with established partners.
